Present Day
Catawba Valley Health System has continued expanding and increasing their quality throughout the years to today. In addition to receiving 10 Women's Choice Awards, Catawba Valley Medical Center officially opened their new Heart Center as well as their new Emergency Department.

2020's
Awards and Recognitions Catawba Valley Medical Center received include the following:
Top 100 Hospital in America for Patient Experience by the Women’s Choice Awards, with additional recognitions for Bariatric Surgery, Emergency Care, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Obstetrics, Orthopedics, Patient Safety, Stroke Care, and Knee & Hip Replacement.
‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group — the only hospital in the Unifour region to earn this distinction; 18 ‘A’ grades in the last 19 reporting periods.

Best of Catawba Award winner by Hickory Daily Record readers, including Best Hospital, Best Healthcare Organization, Best Cardiology, Best Vascular Care, and 2nd Place for Best Family Medicine.

Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence designation from the Infectious Disease Society of America — one of only four hospitals in North Carolina recognized for safe, effective antimicrobial use.


2010's
Catawba Valley Imaging Center opens, providing off-campus imaging.

Catawba Valley Medical Center is awarded its third Magnet recognition from the ANCC.
​
The medical center completes renovations and expansions to their Surgical Suites.
​
Catawba Valley Medical Group opens its first specialty practice, Catawba Valley Cardiology.
​
Catawba Medical Foundation raises more than $3.6 million through a capital campaign to assist in the construction of a new patient Pavilion to house the Center for Women & Children and Comprehensive Cancer Center. Catawba Valley Medical Center's Volunteer Auxiliary contributed $1 million of the funds raised.

Catawba Valley Medical Center is named one of the 100 Best Hospitals for Patient Experience by the Women's Choice Award.
​
Recognized for best practices in stroke care, the Joint Commission awards Primary Stroke Center accreditation to the medical center.
​
The new patient Pavilion is opened, housing the Center for Women & Children and Comprehensive Cancer Center, bringing all the cancer services together. The Center for Women & Children includes a state-of-the-art NICU with private rooms, unique within the region.

For the first time in the medical center's history, the Birthing Center delivers more than 2,000 babies in a single year.
​
Catawba Valley Medical Center celebrates 50 years as the hospital the community built.
​
Catawba Valley Health System becomes the overall brand name, reflecting the three entities comprising the system-Catawba Valley Medical Center, Catawba Valley Medical Group and Catawba Medical Foundation.

CVMC became North Carolina's first and only five-time Magnet® recipient for excellence in nursing.



2000's
Catawba Memorial Hospital receives
designation as the 32nd Magnet Hospital in the nation by the American Nurses Credentialing
Center (ANCC), recognizing excellence in nursing.
​
To better reflect the scope of services and practices provided by the hospital, Catawba Memorial Hospital changes its name to Catawba Valley Medical Center.
​
Catawba Valley Medical Center is awarded its second Magnet recognition from the ANCC, based on continued improvement, growth and innovation within nursing.


1990's
A new Emergency Department, Critical Care Unit and Center for Rehabilitation are opened, supporting the continuing growth of our community.

Catawba Memorial Hospital celebrates its 25th year of serving the community. The hospital opens primary care practices, which will later evolve into the Catawba Valley Medical Group.
​
Catawba Medical Foundation creates Steps Into the Future, a giving program that memorializes or honors a birth.
1980's
Catawba Memorial Hospital becomes the first in North Carolina to offer Lifeline services.
​
Catawba Memorial Hospital implements the Labor-Delivery-Recovery-Postpartum (LDRP) model of care in its new birthing rooms.
​
The hospital initiates a nursing research program, another key step in advancing the practice of nursing.
​
David Boone joins the staff, later becoming the first Chief Financial Officer.
​
(MRI) is introduced to Catawba Memorial Hospital expanding its imaging services.
​
Expansion of the Cancer Center is completed, accommodating the increasing needs for radiation therapy within the community.
​
The hospital opens its new Day Surgery Center, meeting the growing demand for outpatient surgeries.



1970's
Catawba Memorial plans its first expansion and brought on the first full-time physicians in 1970.
​
Western Piedmont Community College uses Catawba Memorial Hospital for clinical teachings for their Liscened Practical Nurse (LPN) program.
​
The Lenoir-Rhyne College nursing program begins clinicals at the hospital.
​
Catawba Memorial adds floors 4-7 to the main tower, expanding patient care services to accommodate increasing volumes.
​
Wake Forest Bowman Gray School of Medicine interns and medical students begin training at the hospital.
​
Radiation therapy is introduced in the new Cancer Center at Catawba Memorial Hospital.
​
Began the "911" era by introducing an EMT training program in 1976.
​
The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is built in 1977.
​
The addition of a new Emergency Department is completed and opened in 1978.
​
The 100,000th patient is admitted to the hospital -
Frances Ellen Harp of Hudson, NC.​​
1960's
In the early 60's, Catawba Memorial Hospital was proposed.
​
Catawba Memorial Hospital officially opens its doors in October of 1967.
​
The first patient, Mrs. Christine Cloninger; her son David is the first baby born at the new hospital.
​
The Gift Shop opened in 1968.
​
The "computerization" age began with the introduction of the Sequential Multiple Analyzer (SAM) in the Lab.
​
Catawba Memorial Hospital is awarded its first Joint Commission Accreditation in 1969, a nationwide symbol that reflects an organization's commitment to quality.​
